One of the four pillars of the National Honor Society (NHS) is to stimulate a desire to render service. According to the NHS, members embody this pillar by “making voluntary contributions to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic attitude.”
The NHS chapter at Oconomowoc High School accomplished this and more when its 98 members chose the Rogers Foundation Holiday Gift Drive as a project. In fact, when presented with potential projects opportunities, Rogers received resounding affirmation, according to the school’s NHS Co-Advisor Heather Rincon Stegner.
Heather explained that students view Rogers as a valued community resource that helps people deal with a lot of the mental health concerns that they or fellow classmates can relate to. NHS members thought about the upcoming holidays and felt they could have an impact in bringing smiles to the faces of people who are going through a tough time. Their hope was to bring joy to people who might not otherwise feel much of it at that moment in time.
Student officers led the charge in organizing a gift drive as over the course of the project, NHS members contributed time and dollars to purchase a variety of items—from gift cards to board games to support Rogers Holiday Gift Drive.
Heather summed up the project this way:
“Students gained the satisfaction that comes from rendering service. Giving unconditionally is a great way to build character while helping others in the community. Our teen members hope to continue the relationship they’ve started with Rogers.”
That’s a long-lasting contribution that Rogers looks forward to!
